Movie & a Makeover - Charla Krupp

Charla Krupp is the author of HOW NOT TO LOOK OLD, the ultimate style guide for boomer women in bookstores January 2008. She is also a contributing editor to More Magazine where she writes the monthly column, FASHION FOR GROWNUPS. Before this book, Charla was Executive Editor of Shop Etc., the Hearst shopping magazine that launched in September 2004. Charla is an award-winning journalist nationally known for her accessible, “real woman’s” approach to fashion and beauty on television, in magazines and on the Internet. For the last ten years, she has appeared in over 130 style segments on NBC’s Today show. She covered the gamut of style as Today’s on-air style expert: from a three-part series on Beauty and Fashion Makeovers to Wedding Style, Beach Style, Baby Style even Pet Style.

Before Shop, Charla did a second stint at In Style magazine—the publishing phenomenon she helped create—turning magazine stories into TV segments for national shows. Charla was also the beauty editor of People Magazine’s recent Style Watch special issues.

Charla is widely recognized as the first fashion magazine editor to have a monthly TV style segment. The beauty and fashion insider has done seven woman-on-the-street style segments for Oprah. She conceived and co-hosted The E Channel’s first Academy Awards Fashion Review. As an E Channel contributor, Charla delivered weekly pop culture commentary on The Gossip Show. She’s been seen on more than twenty-five national TV shows, including Dateline, Good Morning America, The View, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Access Hollywood, Inside Edition, ABC’s World News, Fox News, CNN’s Business Unusual. As a print journalist, she has written for Time Magazine, The New York Times, In Style, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Cosmopolitan, The Chicago Tribune, and USA Today Weekend.

For a year, Charla pioneered the beauty space on the Internet as Editor-in-Chief and Vice President of eve.com, which she made the number-one online beauty web-site. Before eve tempted her, Charla was the Beauty Director of Glamour, returning there to work with her mentor, Editor-in-Chief Ruth Whitney. Under Charla, Glamour won both the American Association of Dermatology Golden Triangle Award and the FiFi Award for two consecutive years. (The magazine hadn’t won since 1982.) Glamour’s advertising and circulation reached a high when Charla gave the pages an industry-recognized makeover. Her accomplishments were the subject of two Glamour videos, directed by Fashion File’s Karen Morrison.

At In Style from 1995-97, Charla helped circulation skyrocket from 350,000 to a million-plus. She created The In Style Shopper, Wise Buys and Cheap Chic plus Getting Gorgeous, the most successful and still-repeated cover package. Charla wrangled many celebrities for covers and inside stories. Charla brought fifteen years’ worth of celebrity relationships and contacts to In Style, as the Entertainment Editor of Glamour, where she interviewed over 1000 of the biggest names in entertainment, every major star from Meryl Streep to Madonna. At Glamour, Charla created the magazine’s celebrated Women of the Year Awards in her entertainment pages. She reviewed movies, music, theater, TV, and reported on timely feminist issues such as sexism and ageism affecting women in Hollywood. Before Glamour, Charla was Editor-in-Chief of Talk Magazine.

Charla lives in New York City and Sagaponack.
