Season 3: Episode 56: Theo's Flight
After a member of the Tuskegee Airmen makes a speech at their school, Theo and Cockroach decide that their main purpose in life is to fly. Cliff suggests that they consider the Air Force after graduation, but they are determined to fly immediately. Theo asks for permission to take an introductory flying lesson, and Cliff leaves the decision to Clair. He is surprised when she agrees. She explains that she is terrified, but has always vowed to encourage the children's dreams. Cliff tries to discourage Theo and Cockroach after the first lesson by calculating the cost of a pilot's license and a private plane. The boys resolve to get part-time jobs to pay for the license, but soon realize that they would never have any free time. They decide that the idea isn't practical, leaving Clair relieved. Rudy brings home her new boyfriend, Bud, and upsets her parents by constantly bossing him around. Clair talks to her about her behavior, while Cliff encourages Bud to stand up for himself. He reveals that his name is actually Kenny; Rudy began calling him "Bud" because she prefers that name.
