Season 2: Episode 28: Cliff in Love
During a weekend visit, Sondra breaks up with boyfriend Elvin for the umpteenth time after he shows up several hours late for a date. She drives everyone crazy as she mopes around the house, and leaves Theo terrified by constantly berating him because of his gender. Cliff and Clair suggest that she go out with someone else, and she agrees to a blind date with a friend of a friend. Elvin shows up with flowers to apologize, and annoys Cliff with his comments about working women. Sondra quickly takes him back. She keeps her date with Darryl, a pre-med student at Oberlin College. Cliff is very impressed by the polite, intelligent Darryl, whose attitude about working women is the complete opposite of Elvin's. Cliff invites Darryl to the family dinner and tries to convince him to make a play for Sondra. Clair tells Cliff that they have to accept whichever boy Sondra chooses, and points out that Cliff was once as hopeless as Elvin. She believes that Elvin will mature. However, she lights into him when he makes a somewhat sexist comment while waiting to drive Sondra back to school.
