" Turner & Hooch" K-9 Grain Dog Biscuits

Yes, this week's recipe is a treat for your dog. Just wait until you see the great things these biscuits are made from, though! You will want them for yourself!

You will need:

  • 1/4 cup brown rice
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup wheat germ
  • 1/4 cup bulgur wheat
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1cup corn meal
  • 1/2 cup whole oats
  • 1/4 cup oat bran
  • 1/4 cup rye flour
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 2 tablespoons brewer?s yeast
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or bacon drippings
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup finely grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley
  • 1 copy "Who Let the Dogs Out" by the Baha Men

Directions:

  1. Cook the brown rice as per package instructions. Set aside to cool.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine whole-wheat flour, wheat germ, bulgur wheat, all-purpose flour, corn meal, whole oats, oat bran, rye flour, powdered milk, brewer's yeast, garlic powder, and baking powder.
  3. Add the bacon drippings to the dry mixture and stir together until no large lumps remain.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the beaten eggs, beef broth, cheese, and chopped parsley.
  5. Add the egg mixture to the K-9 grain mixture and stir well to create a cohesive dough. Turn the dough out onto a clean, floured surface and knead 2-3 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 300F. Divide the dough into quarters; roll 1 quarter out to a thickness of 1/2". Use a cookie cutter or paring knife to cut out nervous little mailmen, beckoning fire hydrants, expensive shoes, harmless kittens, or any other shape your dog finds uniquely irresistible. Repeat with the remaining dough, combining and re-rolling the scraps.
  7. Bake the K-9 Grain treats on a parchment-lined cookie sheet for 1 hour. Turn off heat and let the treats remain in the oven another 30 minutes, until dry and crisp.
  8. Put "Who Let the Dogs Out?" on the stereo and serve.
  9. To clean up:

(A) Place dirty bowls and utensils on floor.
(B) Whistle for dog.

Makes about fifty 2" treats
