" Christine" Wow, Maybe I Shouldn't Have Had a V-8 After All

Making this vegetable juice medley for the film CHRISTINE can be safe and fun, as long as the blender doesn't have a mind of its own. If that happens, fight back the evil appliance with our Spanish-style gazpacho.

You will need:

For the V-8 juice:

  • 10-12 large, very ripe tomatoes, cut into quarters, or one 28-oz. can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 4 carrots
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 1/4-1/2 small, fresh, raw beet, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/4 cup parsley
  • 1/4 cup watercress
  • 1/4 cup fresh spinach
  • 1/2 lemon, peeled

For the gazpacho:

  • 1 cup French bread cut into cubes
  • 3-5 cloves garlic
  • 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 4-5 tablespoons sherry vinegar
  • 1 small red onion, peeled and quartered
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup ice water
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • crushed ice
  • assorted vegetable garnishes: cucumber, bell peppers, tomato, onion, etc., finely diced
  • 1 vintage vegetable juicer with a mind of its own

Directions

1. Wash all ingredients and refrigerate until chilled.

2. Run the first eight ingredients through a juicer. Season to taste with a pinch of salt if desired.

3. Drink. Spend next 45 minutes cleaning juicer. Or, if you want to give this juice a life of its own, please continue with the following recipe instructions for chilled Spanish-style gazpacho.

4. Combine bread, garlic, olive oil, sherry vinegar, onion, and cucumber in the work bowl of a food processor. Puree until smooth and strain into the fresh juice mixture. Add the ice water and adjust seasonings as needed.

5. Serve ice-cold in chilled bowls. Garnish with crushed ice and lots of finely diced vegetables.

6. Load all the dirty dishes into your late 50's fully automatic dishwasher, and enjoy the ride, 'cause, ya know, chicks dig a guy with a cherry dishwasher and really clean dishes.
