The Mansion - Episode 4
|
 |
 |
 |
Anybody ready for relaxing in the garden? After this week's episode of
The Mansion, our eight contestants will definitely be in the mood to kick back! (Before you read on
about the trials, triumphs, flirtations and fix-ups from this week, don't forget to catch up
on the previous weeks¿ episodes!)
After impressing the judges with the master bedroom last week, then sharing the spoils (though not the credit) like a true team, the group seems revived heading into their latest project. This week, the motley crew is given a
$15,000 budget to complete a Formal Garden. First, however, they have to choose a foreman. Is Andy the right man for the job?
Once Andy states he's so convinced he'll win that he has already
sold his condo, host Mark L. Walberg asks Andy who he thinks is his
greatest competition. Andy admits that it's Elvis...leading to a twist when Mark puts the two rivals on a co-foreman team! For this challenge, Andy and Elvis choose
teams as Elvis is asked about his most valuable resource. His response?
Time! With that, the "Time Team" is formed. Elvis gets Michele, Amanda and Jeff, but also learns that with more time, the group is
given less of the $15,000 pot. They'll only have five grand with which to complete their part of the project.
The other squad becomes the "Money Team"--made up of foreman Andy, Sandi, Kim and Dan--and they get $10,000 and less time to put their garden together. As Andy's group gets to work, Elvis and his
group enjoy a picnic lunch, spa treatment and dinner--and they take with them the laptop
needed by the other group.
There's immediate conflict between the teams as their foremen exchange words, complete
with an accusation about sabotage. Within the groups, Jeff and Amanda
continue to disagree, as Jeff voices his concern about Amanda's use of the
chainsaw. She responds by calling him a chauvinist to which he counters
that it's no surprise that she isn't married. Part two of the conflict
between Jeff and Amanda occurs when Jeff mentions that Elvis should
highlight the work his team does with no assistance from professionals,
unlike Andy whose group was able to hire landscapers with the additional
money they received. Amanda counters him saying that Elvis should only
discuss their garden and no bashing of the other team is necessary. When she
uses her finger to emphasize her point, Jeff pushes it away. To this, Amanda
responds that Jeff shouldn't put his hands on her. When she goes to Elvis
to complain, Andy realizes that his plan to distract his competitors from
their project is working.
Speaking of the Money Team, Andy uses his additional funds to purchase
convenience in the form of power tools--a lawnmower and a 'Bobcat' for
tough digging--while the Time Team ribs him about his machismo as he
struggles to use the machines. Andy also takes this time to convince his
troops to pull all-nighters to make up for the shortage in time. Will this
extra work pay off on judgment day?
Soon, both foremen have a tough decision to make: will they
trade a team member for extra cash or extra time? When host Mark L. Walberg
offers Andy and Elvis the choice, each declines. But the joke is on them
as they are forced to make the decision to trade team members between the
groups anyway. Andy swaps away Sandi to steal Michele from Elvis and the decision causes
a rift in the budding romance. Though Sandi thwarts Andy's initial attempts
to smooth things over while the garden challenge is still going, Andy still has a few tricks up his sleeve. It looks like not even he believes his
comment earlier in the episode that "friends are friends but business is
business."
The clock has slowed to a stop and before the contestants know it, it's time to face the judges. The Time Team goes first, and one of the judges inform Elvis that he's not impressed with the workmanship given the additional time they had. Also, their failure to put in
overnighters may hurt them. Two of the judges, however, offer praise for great design, use
of color, and for the finished product being "purposeful and studied."
Next, Money Team foreman Andy takes his turn in front of the judges.
The group receives negative feedback about the mismatched nature of the
garden foliage and fixtures, as well as for the malfunctioning fountain. Fortunately, they're
also given praise for spending their money well and for working hard. The
judges email their results to Mark.
When the payoff is announced, the Money Team wins the pot, getting $7,400. Andy has
to decide between keeping it or dispersing the checks to his workers. One of the four
paychecks (for $2960) is given to Dan, the next to Kim ($1480) and another to Michele ($740). Earlier, Andy mentioned he had
a plan for Sandi. Well, he gives her $2220 for "design" (but really as a good-faith gesture to save their
friendship).
Sandi doesn't receive the check well--or the roses Andy sends her later--so Andy keeps the money. He vows that when he is the mansion's owner, Sandi
may have to work to nab a spot as his partner.
Once again, there's a prize in one of this week's checks. Kim
wins a wireless computer system with her check, adding a nice prize to her cash reward.
