king of the nerds RETURNS IN 2015
Brian is a library science scholar who enjoys German-style board games and discussing 18th-century European history. At one time, he had 100 books checked out from the Yale library.
Nerds or Runts: Nerds, obviously!
Pizza or Chinese food delivery: Probably pizza, but good vegetarian sushi beats both!
Star Trek or Star Wars: Star Trek – no question. DS9 is my favorite, followed closely by TNG
Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead or Battlestar Galactica: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
PlayStation, Xbox, Wii or PC: As home to some of the best RPGs, I have to go with Playstation.
World of Warcraft or Call of Duty: I prefer text-based roleplaying MUXs, like FiranMUX
BioShock Infinite or Fez: A fez is a hat. I own one. Does that count?
Math or Science: Science – I’m particularly fond of evolutionary theory and ecology
Edison or Tesla: Tesla – it’s clichéd to like Tesla at this point, but I have such a soft spot for tormented madmen (see also: Lord Byron).
Sharpies or Bics: Sharpies – but don’t try to take either one into my rare book room!
Comic-con or Dragon Con: Haven’t yet been to either, but Comic-Con is where I’d like to go!
Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit: A toughie…but let’s go with LotR.
Vine or Instagram Video:
Mac or PC: Mac
Marvel or DC Comics: Marvel
Droid, iPhone or Blackberry: Droid
Asteroids or Ms. PacMan: Ms. PacMan
What character would you be in Mario Kart? Toad! I have a small body, but a big head!
Which family would you belong to in Game of Thrones? Stark, Lannister or Targaryen? Sadly, I have yet to read/watch/otherwise absorb Game of Thrones.
If you have a pet (what they are and what their name is): Two cats, Leo and Topaz.
The one celebrity/icon (past/present) you would have wanted on your team on the show: Sir Francis Bacon – the ultimate polymath, a revolutionary scientist and philosopher who caught pneumonia and died while studying the effects of freezing meat. He’s Bacon!
What planet other than Earth would you live on? Bajor
Which house would you belong in Harry Potter? Ravenclaw!
Aliens – Exist or Myth: If aliens did not exist, it would be necessary to invent them.
Favorite Superhero: I am quite fond of Hank McCoy, AKA Beast
Favorite Video Game: Chrono Trigger
Favorite TV Show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer again?
Favorite Movie: Hard to pick, but Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is up there.
Favorite Musician or Band: The Decemberists are nice
Favorite Musical Instrument: Aeolian harps are neat, and you don’t actually have to learn how to play them!
Favorite Book: If I must choose, “Fathers and Sons” by Ivan Turgenev (although “Fathers and Children” is a better translation of the title)
Favorite Game Show: Jeopardy!
Favorite Doctor from Doctor Who: I must plead ignorance here – mea culpa!
Favorite King of the Nerds contestant from last season: Ivan
If you were trapped on a desert island what three items would you bring?
- Assuming that internet access is out of the question, Proust’s ~5,000 page epic, In Search of Lost Time (it’s long and will entertain me!)
- Lots and lots of duct tape (you can MacGyver anything out of that, and Mythbusters agrees!)
- A towel (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy can’t be wrong here…it has so many uses!)
- Samuel Johnson (famous lexicographer, poet and literary critic)
- Joss Whedon
- Ronald D. Moore (Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica writer)
