Remember you’re in the picture too
With the abundance of digital cameras, camera phones in the hands of trigger happy in-laws and friends, your chances are your kid has already been photographed more then Brittany Spears in a hair Salon. Well guess who else is showing up in those snapshots? Some of my most treasured photos are of me as a child with my parents and grandparents. They looked young, vibrant and well dressed. Remember, those photos are your legacy too. Do you want to be immortalized looking like you are ready to paint the garage?
Lose the Logos.
When it comes to casual style, you could do worse then to imitate Brad Pitt. The guy has so many kids I lost count, but he manages to look pretty at ease whenever he is photographed with them. He plays it safe with denim, t-shirts, and work boots, and he keeps it simple. To emulate his vibe, go for darker denim with a classic straight-leg cut and steer clear of T-shirts emblazoned with slogans. Do you think the words greatest dad really needs to advertise that fact?
X out the XL
Something in the male psyche whispers that bigger is better, but baggy clothes tend to make you look sloppy and heavier then you are. Learn to downsize. Properly fitted clothing will make you look better and feel better about yourself.
Say good bye to old Friends
Those T-shirts you wore in college? The stain splattered dress shirt? Toss’em. As a dad, you’re going to be harder on clothes than ever before. Love is a battlefield, and the battle starts in your closet. Be merciless.
Don’t wear Running shoes unless you’re running.
You are living in a golden age for casual footwear. Whether it is stylish offerings of Dress sneakers (like the Y-3 Yammaoto From Adidas) drink moccasins from Tod’s, or a pair of Prada dress sneakers, there are plenty of options that offer both comfort and style.
Value in Versatility
When choosing a suit for work, choose something that can give you multiple looks and plenty of mileage. Make sure you opt for a classic 2-button style in a solid color so you can get more then one look without raising a flag. I vary the look with jeans at night and dress up the jacket with a pocket square.
Grooming
Most men can be clueless when it comes to their hairstyle or facial hair. For some, it is an inability to let go of their college days, or even worse: the Eighties. There are lot of guys playing offensive line who would rather be playing quarterback, but they eventually had to embrace their unique gifts and body type. The same is true of hair lines and the inevitable recession most men face.
For facial hair, unless you’re Josh Brolin you probably shouldn’t wear a goatee. It can be the grooming equivalent of clipping a cell phone to your belt. When in doubt, go for a clean shave- it will always help you look pulled together.
