Episode 202 - Ask Your Mother
So I know you guys are dying to know more about our writing team, are we rich, are we hot, and if the answer to the first two questions is yes, are we married? I am sad to report that for most of us answers are: we do okay, real beauty comes from within, and yeah, sorry.
But there is one dude on the team who is single! And, being the only single guy in the room, he has to give us a play by play of every date he goes on. We love this. It gives us something to be judgmental about first thing in the morning, which I really enjoy, and it gives us something to bet on besides sports and whether our PA can drink a whole bottle of ketchup.
The week we broke the story for “Ask Your Mother,” our single writer had made a date with a girl he’d met at a party, but she ended up canceling at the last minute. So he wrote her an email asking if she’d like to reschedule.
Now, when you are a professional comedy writer there’s a lot of pressure to write your date a very clever e-mail, especially if you know someone at work is going to find it and read it to everyone out loud. And when she didn’t call back after a day, or two days, or three days, he started to pick it apart and become consumed with self-loathing, which is another very writerly thing to do.
So the next day he announced that he’d thought about it and sent her another, more clever follow-up email. This happened a couple of times, and eventually turned into the story where Paul is courting Dierdre. It has yet to turn into a second date for our writer, but it’s only been about two months since she cancelled, so. It could still happen.
