Chef, TV personality and all-around bad boy Anthony Bourdain has teamed up with Le Bernardin Chef Eric Ripert for a comedy tour of sorts. The two have a very public Twitter relationship where they constantly bust either other’s pork chops, a funny and witty banter which they bring to the stage. Bourdain, also a cuisinier of French food, is known for hosting Travel Channel’s “No Reservations” and “ The Layover,” and Ripert is no stranger to television, as he hosts PBS’s “Avec Eric,” though most of his time is spent braising in his swanky New York restaurant. The “Good vs. Evil” tour, which started last year, only has a few dates slated, as the two are busy gallivanting around the globe and feeding Manhattan’s upper crust. But based on reviews, and their Twitter exchanges, it seems like these chefs know as much about comedy as they do about cooking. And that’s a good thing. Bon comédie!
Russell Brand is taking to the stage for “What About Dick?” at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theater. The comedian joins English comedy vets Eddie Izzard, Jane Leeves, Tim Curry, and Tracey Ullman, among others, for the April 26-29 run. The play centers on Dick (Brand), an Oxford student studying philosophy and gynecology. The play’s writer, Monty Pythoner Eric Idle, describes the farcical period-piece as “Merchant-Irony.” The show will be performed as a radio play, where actors read from scripts and usually are sitting or standing in front of microphones. “What About Dick?” first came to the stage as a workshop project in Los Angeles in 2007, but has since been re-written and reworked by Idle.
Historic sports journalist Howard Cosell’s grandson, Colin Cosell, who’s also a sports reporter by day, has started his own online comedy network. The Social News Media Network, very much a bare-bones grassroots venture, is funny and avant-garde at the same time. The premise is simple: you, social media users, report the news. Cosell brings the funniest takes on the news he can find on social media and reports them as reactions to the news. After just four episodes, Cosell says the weekly show already has an investor. The show currently plays on YouTube.
Who knew Texas could be so hip? On top of getting music-y, and filmy, Austin is getting funny in March. The SXSW festival comedy arm has named its performers, and this year’s crop has doubled in size from last year’s. In total, 62 comedians are set to perform, but part of the festival’s appeal is that most of their performance dates remain a mystery. Some of the well-known acts set to take the stage include Todd Barry, Amy Schumer, Kevin Pollak and T.J. Miller. Also taking place in the Lone Star state’s hippest festival, eight comedy podcast recordings, including a special “WTF with Marc Maron” and a taping of Scott Aukerman’s “Comedy Bang! Bang!” This ain’t no rodeo.
