A new patient appears at a Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) door. He is very insecure and needs much help. Dr. Marvin gives the patient, Bob(Bill Murry), a copy of his new book, Baby Steps, and leaves for a vacation. Bob discovers where the doc has gone and shows up. Bob's presence changes the Marvin family forever.
